Most of the field faded

Guye Adola won in 2:02:50 with halves of 1:01:02 and 1:01:49, a second half 1.3% slower than the first. Tigst Assefa won the women's race in 2:11:04 (1:04:57 and 1:06:08). Behind them the field slowed far more.

The median finisher ran 4:11:19, and the median second half was 8.9% slower than the first. Only 10.4% ran a negative split. Another 9.3% stayed within 2% of even. 19.6% slowed by more than 20%, which for a 2:00 first half means a second half past 2:24.

The second half decided the places

Official places only exist at the finish. To see who moved, we ranked every runner at every timing mat by net time, from their own start line crossing. Wave starts drop out of the picture that way. From the half-marathon mat to the finish, the median runner in each pacing group moved like this:

Second half vs firstRunnersMedian places gainedShare who gained
Negative split5,071+4,202100%
Even (0 to 2% slower)4,554+2,590100%
2 to 5% slower6,886+1,91596.7%
5 to 10% slower9,794+95476.2%
More than 10% slower22,654-1,67020.3%

Every runner who split even or negative moved up. Because nearly half the field slowed by more than 10%, even pacing on its own was enough to pass thousands of people over the last 21 km.

The even and negative splitters kept gaining through the whole second half: a median 1,261 places from halfway to 30 km, 1,726 from 30 to 40 km and 245 more on the last 2.2 km. In the tool, your virtual-ranking chart shows the same climb, or the slide, mat by mat.

Two gaps in the data. The timer published no halves for 1,108 finishers, so they are not in this table. 3,330 runners have at least one split the timer estimated after a missed mat; the tool marks those with an asterisk and uses them as published.

Faster runners paced more evenly

The fade grew with finish time. Finishers under three hours slowed by a median 2.2%, and 21.1% of them split negative. Runners who took five hours or longer slowed by 17.5%, and only 2.3% split negative. The full breakdown by finish time sits on the results page.

The results cannot say why. They record the times, not the training, the goal or the weather each runner planned for. What they do show is that even pacing was rare at every level and paid off in places at every level.

If you are planning your next marathon, the marathon pace chart turns a goal time into even or negative-split halves and a printable pace band.
