What watts per kilogram tells you

On the flat, raw watts push you through the air. On a climb you also lift your body mass, and power-to-weight decides who rides away. Two riders at 280 W are not equal if one weighs 60 kg (4.7 W/kg) and the other 90 kg (3.1 W/kg).

The ratio uses FTP, the power you can hold for about an hour, the same number that sets your power zones.

How to read your percentile

The bell curve shows how W/kg is distributed across cyclists. The shaded area left of your marker is the share of riders you are ahead of: your percentile. Switch between all riders, men and women, since the distributions differ.

The data comes from TrainerRoad's member base, so it skews toward cyclists who train with power.

How to improve your W/kg

Two levers: raise FTP or lower weight. Raising FTP through structured training is the durable route and improves your riding everywhere. Losing excess weight helps down to a healthy point. Cut further and you lose power.

FAQ

What is a good watts per kilogram?

It depends on the comparison group. Around 2.5 to 3.0 W/kg is typical for a recreational rider, 3.5 to 4.0 is a strong club racer, and 4.5+ is the top few percent. The calculator shows your exact percentile.

How do I find my FTP?

FTP (functional threshold power) is the highest average power you can hold for about an hour. Estimate it from a 20-minute test (95% of the 20-minute average) or let a smart trainer or app estimate it.

Why watts per kilogram instead of raw watts?

Raw watts win on the flat. On a climb you also lift your body weight, so dividing power by mass normalises for size. That is why W/kg is the standard way to compare climbing ability.

Does losing weight improve my W/kg?

Yes. Weight is the denominator, so dropping mass without losing power raises W/kg. There is a floor: cutting past a healthy point costs power and health, so most riders gain more by raising FTP.
