How Katie Ledecky Trains (the Most Aerobic Athlete in the Pool)

Katie Ledecky is the most dominant distance swimmer who has ever lived, and her event is almost pure aerobic engine. She holds the world records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle, has won nine Olympic gold medals, and in 2025 became the first swimmer of any gender to win seven world titles in a single event. What makes her the perfect subject for this series is not a secret session or a gadget. It is that her whole sport is holding a precise pace for longer than anyone else can, and she trains it the way an amateur should: against the clock, not against a heart-rate strap.

The most aerobic athlete in the pool

Distance freestyle is one of the most aerobic events in all of sport, and Ledecky trains it with the volume to match. Under coach Anthony Nesty at the University of Florida, where she moved her base in 2021, she reportedly covers around 45 miles a week in the pool on top of dryland and weight-room work, training in the distance group alongside the university's men. That is a genuinely large aerobic base, built patiently over years, and it is the same principle that shows up in every endurance post in this series: the engine is built slowly, with most of the work sitting at controlled, repeatable efforts rather than all-out.

Her coaching lineage runs from Yuri Suguiyama to Bruce Gemmell to Greg Meehan and now Nesty, and the throughline across all of them is high, precise volume. Describing her 2024 to 2025 training block, Ledecky said, "By Christmas training, I was doing things I've never done before from a yardage perspective, from intensity, from times I'm hitting in practice while doing that kind of yardage." The volume is the point, but so is the precision of the paces inside it.

She races a pace, not an opponent

Ledecky almost always leads from the front and wins by open water, which means she is rarely racing the person next to her. She is racing a target pace, holding a split she knows she can sustain while everyone else fades. That habit is built in training through descending and hold-pace sets, where the instruction is not "swim hard" but "hold this exact time per hundred, then this slightly faster one," repeated across a long set. One documented example from her development was a set of eleven 400s descending from around 4:07 down to 3:49, each one swum to a target rather than to feel.

This is the swimmer's version of the discipline that runs through the whole series. It is the same idea as Kipchoge's controlled easy running and Ingebrigtsen's lactate-capped thresholds: pick a number you can repeat, and train to hold it honestly instead of turning every session into a race.

Why swimmers use a stopwatch, not a heart strap

Here is the part that transfers directly to you, and it is the same lesson as the Léon Marchand post. Heart rate, the metric half this series is built on, barely works in the water. Being horizontal and immersed blunts the heart-rate response, and reading a monitor mid-stroke is impractical anyway. So swimmers use the one signal that is precise and always available: pace per hundred. Where Marchand's medley training leans on short rest and race-pace intensity, Ledecky's distance training leans on holding a pace over long sets, but both are organised around the same external number.

  • Critical Swim Speed is your threshold pace, about 1:35 per 100 m here. It is the slope of the 200 m and 400 m efforts, so both must be genuinely maximal and well-paced.
  • Swim CSS as a 400 m and a 200 m time trial on the same session, fully rested between. If the 200 m is not much faster than 400-m pace, you likely didn't pace the 400 m hard enough.
  • Heart rate is unreliable in the water, so CSS pace is the most practical anchor for swim training.

Swim a 400 and a 200 as hard as you can hold each, feed in the times, and you get your CSS: the pace that approximates your swimming threshold. From there every set has an anchor. Your easy swims sit a few seconds per hundred slower, your threshold sets sit right around it, and your fast work sits above it. It is exactly what Ledecky does with her descending sets, scaled to your own engine: hold a known pace, then a slightly faster one, rather than guessing at "moderate." Most amateur swimmers grind every length at a vague effort with lots of wall-hanging in between, which builds neither a real base nor real speed. Anchoring to CSS fixes both.

2024 to 2026

Ledecky won gold in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics, then at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore became the first swimmer ever to win seven world titles in the same individual event, the 800m freestyle. As of 2026 she is still based at the University of Florida under Nesty and still, remarkably, extending records she set as a teenager. Longevity at the very top, on a foundation of aerobic volume built over more than a decade, is its own lesson, and one she shares with the endurance athletes in this series who are still winning years after their peers retired.

What you can actually steal from it

  • Build the aerobic base. Distance swimming is almost pure aerobic engine, and it is built with patient volume at controlled efforts, not a few heroic sessions.
  • Set your swim zones from a stopwatch. Heart rate doesn't work in water. Critical Swim Speed is the swimmer's threshold, from two honest time trials.
  • Hold a pace, don't "swim hard." Ledecky races a target split, not the swimmer next to her. Give every set a number and hold it.
  • Descend on purpose. Sets that step down through known paces teach control and honesty far better than swimming until you are tired.
  • Play the long game. Her dominance rests on more than a decade of accumulated aerobic work. Consistency compounds.

Ledecky looks superhuman because she holds a pace nobody else can for longer than anyone else. Underneath it is the least mysterious method in this whole series: a very large aerobic base, trained against precise, repeatable splits, with the clock as the only instrument that matters. That clock is the one you can copy for free tomorrow.
