
How Cole Hocker Trains (One Engine, From the Mile to the 5000)
Cole Hocker's defining quality is range. In 2024 he won Olympic 1500m gold in an Olympic-record 3:27.65, out-kicking a field that didn't see him coming. A year later he won the world 5000m title in Tokyo. In early 2026 he ran an indoor mile of 3:45.94, an American record and the second-fastest indoor mile in history, behind only Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Being genuinely world-class from the mile to the 5000 is rare, and it's the most useful thing about him for a normal runner, because it's a live demonstration that these distances are powered by one engine, not several.
The span, in numbers
Hocker's personal bests tell the story better than any training anecdote. Olympic 1500m gold at 3:27.65. A 5000m of 12:58.30 at the 2025 World Championships, where he won. An outdoor mile of 3:47.43, and that 3:45.94 indoors that put him a fraction behind Ingebrigtsen's world record. That's a runner who can win a tactical, kick-decided 1500 and also grind out a 5000 title against specialists.
For context, the outdoor mile world record itself moved in 2026, to Josh Kerr's 3:42.66, so Hocker sits among a genuinely stacked generation of milers. What makes him unusual even in that company is how far up in distance his speed carries.
Range is one engine, expressed at different speeds
It is tempting to imagine a miler and a 5000m runner as different animals, one built for speed and one for endurance. Hocker is the counter-argument. The same aerobic engine underpins both. A miler's finishing speed sits on top of it, and a 5000m runner's durability draws from the same well, but the base is shared. That's precisely why a fast mile predicts a competitive 5000 and vice versa: they are two expressions of the same fitness.
This is the idea that VDOT formalises. Jack Daniels' system takes one race result and derives a single fitness number, then projects your equivalent times and training paces across every distance from 1500 to the marathon:

- Your VDOT of 49.8 is a single number that captures current running fitness (a 'VO₂max' adjusted for running economy). Every training pace is derived from it.
- VDOT comes from one recent, hard race or time trial. Use a result you raced all-out, ideally 5 km or longer; a half-marathon or 10 km gives the most stable estimate.
- Switch the units toggle to read paces per mile. As you get fitter, re-race; your VDOT and all paces will update.
- These are Daniels’ discrete training paces (E, M, T, I, R), not continuous zones: you run at each one for a specific purpose. The gaps between the harder paces (T, I and R) are intentional, not a glitch.

Put in a recent race, at whatever distance you actually raced, and it tells you what your engine is currently worth everywhere else, plus the paces you should be training at. Hocker is what the top of that table looks like when one person's engine is elite across the whole range. Your own VDOT does the same job at your level: it stops you guessing your 5k pace from your 10k feel, and it keeps your easy runs honestly easy.
What we actually know about his training
Hocker is coached by Ben Thomas and trains in Oregon, and he is 25. Compared with the veterans in this series, the fine detail of his week is not heavily documented, so it's worth being honest about that rather than inventing a session breakdown. What is clear is the outline shared by every good middle-distance programme: a large aerobic base of easy mileage, a small amount of very fast, race-specific work to sharpen the top end, and the patience to let both develop. His weapon is a finishing kick, and a kick like his is built on being aerobically strong enough to still have something left when everyone else is empty.
That his indoor mile sits just behind Ingebrigtsen is a neat connection, because the two represent different routes to the same place. Ingebrigtsen's is the heavily systematised Norwegian method; Hocker's is the American collegiate-to-pro track tradition. Both end up needing a big aerobic engine and a sharp finish.
What you can actually steal from it
- Treat your distances as one engine. Your mile speed and your 5k fitness are the same base expressed differently. Train the base, sharpen the ends.
- Use one result to set everything. A recent race plus VDOT gives you equivalent times and, more usefully, your correct training paces across the board.
- Build the kick on aerobic strength. A finish like Hocker's isn't just leg speed, it's being aerobically fresh enough to use it. Most of the work that builds it is easy running.
- Keep easy days easy so the fast days can be fast. The same lesson as everyone else in this series, from a runner whose whole edge is range.
Hocker is young and the granular details of his training aren't fully public, but he's the clearest current example of a principle worth internalising: don't think of yourself as a "5k runner" or a "miler." Think of yourself as an engine, and use a number to see what that engine is worth at any distance.
