How Nadia Battocletti Trains (Olympic Silver off 90km a Week)

Nadia Battocletti has collected ten major medals since 2024: Olympic 10,000m silver in Paris, world 10,000m silver and 5000m bronze in Tokyo, world indoor 3000m gold in Toruń, and on Tuesday night in Birmingham a sixth European title. She does all of it on a training week that a committed club runner would look at and think was light, coached by her father, off a base built almost entirely in winter mud. In a series full of athletes chasing volume, she is the counter-example worth studying.

The number that stops you

Battocletti has put her typical week at 80 to 90km, rising to around 110km at the winter peak, plus one gym session a week during preparation blocks. She has been open that this is less than most of the people she races.

Set that against the rest of this series. Eliud Kipchoge covers north of 200km a week. Jakob Ingebrigtsen sits around 160 to 180km with two double-threshold days stacked on top. Battocletti runs roughly half of Kipchoge's week and took Olympic silver over 25 laps off it, in an Italian record of 30:43.35.

The lesson is not that low mileage is better. Kipchoge's 200km is doing something that 90km cannot. The lesson is that the number on its own tells you almost nothing about the quality of a training week. What decides whether 90km is enough is what those 90km are: how much of it is genuinely easy, how consistently it is repeated, and how many years deep the base underneath it goes. Battocletti has been running European cross-country championships since she was a teenager. Her 90km is sitting on a decade of them.

For most people reading this, the practical version is the same either way: the reason a week works is that the easy running is actually easy, which is the whole argument in how to train zone 2. Volume you cannot recover from is not volume, it is damage.

Cross country is the base

"Cross country is really important to middle distance running," Battocletti has said, "because during the winter you have to put a lot of kilometres in and it gives you strength."

She is not speaking theoretically. Before she was a track medallist she was the best young cross-country runner in Europe, with eight European medals across the U20 and U23 age groups, five of them gold, four of those individual titles. The track results arrived afterwards, out of that base.

There is a physiological reason winter cross country punches above its weight. Mud, grass and hills load the legs in a way flat road running does not, so you get strength work without doing strength work. And rough ground caps your pace for you: it is hard to accidentally race an easy run when the surface will not let you. The kilometres are heavier, and the effort self-limits. That is a good part of why a 90km week can carry a 10,000m runner to a global podium.

A coach who is also her father

Giuliano Battocletti is not a parent who took up coaching. He ran 27:45.74 for 10,000m and 13:20.88 for 5000m, 60:47 for the half marathon and 2:11:59 for the marathon, won the senior European Cross Country title in Ferrara in 1998, and made 17 appearances for Italy. He coaches his daughter, and rides a bike alongside her sessions.

Her description of what that is worth: "A coach is not someone who just writes the training. It's people who understand you."

Put that next to Ingebrigtsen's system, where every repetition is capped by a lactate reading, and the contrast looks total. It isn't. Both are answers to the same problem, which is that endurance athletes reliably run their easy days too hard and their hard days too hard. Ingebrigtsen solves it with a meter. Battocletti solves it with a man on a bike who has run 2:11 and can see when she is pushing. The instrument is interchangeable. What matters is that something outside your own enthusiasm is holding the ceiling.

Her altitude work runs out of Font-Romeu in the French Pyrenees, at around 1800m, where the pattern is track sessions, tempo running on a 1km loop, and long runs out around Lac de Matemale.

Birmingham, and what a championship actually rewards

Tuesday's 5000m final was the slowest winning time in the history of the European Championships. Battocletti won it in 15:37.84, more than 74 seconds outside her own 14:23.15 personal best. Maureen Koster dragged the field along at the front and faded to sixth for it. Battocletti sat, moved just before 200m to go, and covered the last lap in 59.2 and the last 200m in 28.2. Marta García took silver in 15:39.98, her Italian teammate Micol Majori bronze in 15:40.65.

That gap between 15:37 and 14:23 is the most useful thing in this post. A championship final is not a time trial with medals attached. It is 4800m of positioning followed by a 60-second race, and it is won by whoever has a kick left, not by whoever has the best season's best. Battocletti did it in a summer she has described as inconsistent, after pulling out of Monaco with anaemia-related fatigue.

On Friday 14 August she goes for the 10,000m as well, chasing the double she pulled off in Rome in 2024.

  • Your VDOT of 49.8 is a single number that captures current running fitness (a 'VO₂max' adjusted for running economy). Every training pace is derived from it.
  • VDOT comes from one recent, hard race or time trial. Use a result you raced all-out, ideally 5 km or longer; a half-marathon or 10 km gives the most stable estimate.

Feed in a recent race and it gives you your easy pace, your threshold pace, your interval pace and your equivalent times at other distances. The easy pace is the one that matters most here, because it is the number that decides whether your own 90km week is 90km of training or 90km of fatigue.

What you can actually steal from it

  • Volume is a means, not a score. 80 to 90km a week produced Olympic 10,000m silver. Ask what your kilometres are for before you ask how many there are.
  • Build the base in winter, on rough ground. Cross country gives strength you cannot get on flat roads, and the surface caps your pace for you. Hills, grass and trails count.
  • Something has to hold the ceiling. A lactate meter, a coach on a bike, or a heart-rate cap from the heart-rate zone calculator. Pick one, but have one.
  • Championships reward the kick, not the clock. If your goal is a place rather than a time, practise racing out of a slow, tactical pace, not just time-trialling.
  • Anchor everything to a measured result. Use VDOT to turn one race into the paces you should actually be training at.

Battocletti's career is the quiet rebuttal to the idea that elite endurance is a volume contest. She runs less than her rivals, on a base laid down in the winter by a father who won the same races she did, and she keeps leaving global championships with medals. The engine is not built by the size of the week. It is built by how many honest, unremarkable weeks you can stack behind you.
