
How Garmin Calculates Your VO2 Max (and How Accurate It Is)
Garmin's Firstbeat algorithm reads pace against heart rate in short credible segments. Within 3-5 ml/kg/min of a lab with a chest strap, worse without.
Garmin does not measure your VO2 max. A lab measures it by capturing every breath you exhale into a mask. Garmin infers it, using the Firstbeat Analytics engine, from the relationship between how fast you are going and how hard your heart is working to do it.
The logic is simple enough to state in one line: at a given pace, a fitter runner's heart rate is lower.
What the algorithm actually looks at
Firstbeat does not use your whole run. It picks out 20 to 30 second segments where the data is trustworthy: steady movement, no stopping, no GPS wobble, and heart rate above roughly 70% of your maximum. Those are the credible segments.
For each one it compares two things:
- External workload, your pace from GPS. On flat ground the oxygen cost of running is close to 3.5 × speed in metres per second, with an inclination factor added on hills.
- Internal workload, your heart rate expressed as a percentage of your maximum.
Put the external cost against the internal cost and you get an estimate of the oxygen uptake that pace required, extrapolated to your maximum. For cycling, the same logic runs on power from a paired power meter instead of pace.
Why your max heart rate poisons the whole thing
Notice the second input. Heart rate is used as a percentage of your maximum, which means the estimate depends on a number Garmin got from a formula based on your age.
If your HRmax is set eight beats too high, every effort looks less demanding than it was, because the same heart rate is now a smaller fraction of your ceiling. Garmin then reports a higher VO2 max than you have earned. Set it too low and you get the reverse.
This is the single most common reason people find their Garmin VO2 max implausible, and it is fixable in two minutes by testing HRmax and entering it.

Estimate yours from a race result or a field test and compare. A gap of more than a few points is usually the HRmax setting, not your fitness.
How accurate it is
Reported comparisons against laboratory testing put Garmin's estimate within roughly 3 to 5 ml/kg/min when heart rate comes from a chest strap, and 5 to 8 ml/kg/min on wrist heart rate alone. That is a meaningful spread when a whole training block might move the real number by 2 or 3.
So use it the way it is good rather than the way it is marketed. As an absolute number it is approximate. As a trend, measured the same way each time, it is genuinely useful: if it climbs two or three points across a block, something real improved.
To make the trend readable, keep the inputs constant. Same heart rate source, similar terrain, steady efforts rather than intervals, and runs long enough to produce credible segments. Erratic pacing, heavy hills, trail running and treadmills all reduce the number of usable segments or distort them.
What it is used for downstream
Garmin's VO2 max is not a vanity metric. It feeds race predictions, training status, and the fitness age figure. A wrong VO2 max makes all of those wrong in the same direction.
