UT2 is rowing's easy aerobic base band. What it means, the heart rate and stroke rate to hold, how it fits the UT2–AN system, and how to row it well.
UT2, short for Utilisation 2, is the easiest of rowing's five training bands and where most of your training belongs. It is steady aerobic work at roughly 55–70% of maximum heart rate, at a low stroke rate of 18–20 strokes per minute, easy enough to hold a conversation. It is rowing's version of Zone 2.
What does UT2 mean?
UT2 comes from the five-band system used by British Rowing and World Rowing, originally a German/FISA framework. Easiest to hardest:
- UT2 (Utilisation 2): easy aerobic base · ~55–70% HRmax
- UT1 (Utilisation 1): firmer steady state · ~70–80% HRmax
- AT (Anaerobic Threshold): threshold work · ~80–85% HRmax
- TR (Oxygen Transport): VO₂max intervals · ~85–95% HRmax

Why is UT2 so important?
The adaptations that make you a faster rower are built at easy intensity over many hours. UT2 develops aerobic endurance:
- Mitochondrial density: more cellular engines in the muscle.
- Capillarisation: more blood vessels delivering oxygen and clearing waste.
- Fat metabolism: sparing carbohydrate by burning fat.
- Stroke efficiency: long, low-rate work grooves a relaxed, repeatable stroke.

How do I row in UT2?
Use several signals, because heart rate alone can mislead:
- Heart rate: inside your UT2 band, 55–70% of max. If you do not know your max, see finding your maximum heart rate.
- Stroke rate: 18–20 spm. Low rate forces length and leg drive.
- The talk test: full sentences. Snatching breaths means you have drifted into UT1.
- Your split: note the 500 m split that matches UT2 today, but treat it as a result of the effort, never a target.
A typical session is 40 to 90 minutes of continuous steady rowing. Longer and easy beats shorter and "productive."
The most common UT2 mistake
Rowing it too hard. The erg shows you a split and nudging it down feels like progress. Creeping into UT1 turns an easy day into a moderately hard one: enough to cost recovery, too little to drive adaptation. Keep the rate down, keep breathing conversational, and save hard efforts for AT, TR and AN sessions.
Expect cardiac drift on long pieces. Trust breathing and stroke rate over a few late high beats.
How much UT2 should I do?
In a well-structured rowing week, around 70–80% of volume sits in the aerobic bands (UT2 and UT1), with a smaller dose at threshold and above. For most recreational rowers that means mostly steady-state sessions plus one or two hard workouts. Beginners can go even easier while the base builds.

UT2 on the erg vs. on the water
Same physiology, different feedback. On the erg the monitor gives a precise split and rate, so holding UT2 is easy if you resist chasing the number. On the water, wind, stream and crew move the split constantly, so heart rate, stroke rate and feel lead. Either way: low rate, easy breathing, steady effort.
