How COROS Calculates Your VO2 Max (EvoLab)

COROS estimates VO2 max from a rolling six weeks of outdoor runs, then feeds it into Running Fitness, Marathon Level and the race predictor.

COROS estimates running VO2 max from heart rate and pace on your outdoor runs, which is the same basic model every brand uses. What it does differently is the window: COROS works from a rolling six weeks of training data, adding each new run and dropping everything older than six weeks.

That one design decision explains most of what people find strange about the number.

The six-week window

Because old data falls out of the calculation, your COROS VO2 max is a statement about the last month and a half, not about your career.

Stop running for two weeks and the estimate does not sit still, it degrades, because the evidence supporting it is ageing out. Come back with a strong block and it moves quickly. Compared with a brand that treats VO2 max as a slow-moving lifetime figure, COROS is more responsive and more volatile, and both of those are the same property.

It also means the number is only as good as what is inside the window. Six weeks of easy running gives the algorithm little to work with, because it needs efforts where the pace-to-heart-rate relationship is informative.

What it feeds

On COROS the VO2 max is not a standalone badge. It is an input.

Running Fitness is the core EvoLab value and the foundation of nearly all the long-term data COROS shows you. Marathon Level rates you on the flat road marathon using workout history, VO2 max, threshold zones and running efficiency together. The race predictor runs off the same base.

So an inaccurate VO2 max does not just sit there looking wrong. It propagates into every long-range number the platform gives you.

Estimate yours independently from a race result or a field test. If it disagrees with what EvoLab says by more than a few points, the gap is worth investigating before you trust a race prediction built on it.

Before it will give you a number

COROS needs data before it will start. Its documentation says the algorithm requires at least one 25-minute run at 65% of heart rate reserve or higher before it begins producing running fitness metrics.

Heart rate reserve is the gap between your resting and maximum heart rates, so that threshold depends on both numbers being right. An HRmax set too high raises the bar, and a run that should have qualified quietly does not.

This is the recurring theme across every brand: the VO2 max estimate is only as good as the heart rate anchors underneath it.

FAQ

How does COROS calculate VO2 max? From heart rate and pace on your outdoor runs, using a rolling six-week window of training data.

Why does my COROS VO2 max keep changing? Because data older than six weeks is removed from the calculation. The number tracks your recent training rather than your all-time fitness.

Why is my COROS VO2 max not showing? EvoLab needs at least one 25-minute run at 65% of heart rate reserve or higher before it starts producing running fitness metrics.

Does VO2 max affect my Marathon Level? Yes. Marathon Level is built from workout history, VO2 max, threshold zones and running efficiency together, and the race predictor uses the same base.

Is COROS VO2 max accurate? COROS says it tests close to lab results. Treat it as a trend rather than a precise value, and check it against a field test if a race prediction looks wrong.
