How Garmin Calculates Your Max Heart Rate (HRmax)

Garmin estimates HRmax from your age (208 − 0.7 × age), then raises it from new peaks. How auto-detection works, what it drives, and how to set it.

Garmin does not measure your maximum heart rate (HRmax). It estimates it from your age with 208 − 0.7 × age, then raises the number whenever it records a higher peak during a hard effort. Until then, the HRmax in your profile is a population average. HRmax anchors your HRmax% zones, your VO2 max estimate and your training-load numbers, so an error there propagates everywhere.

The formula Garmin uses by default

Out of the box, Garmin uses the Tanaka formula: 208 − 0.7 × age, which replaced the older "220 − age" rule. For a 40-year-old that is 208 − 28 = 180 bpm.

Age formulas carry an error of roughly ±10–12 bpm for any individual. Two 40-year-olds can both "should-be 180" while one maxes at 168 and the other at 192. Our max heart rate calculator uses the same Tanaka formula as its recommended estimate.

How Garmin auto-updates your HRmax

During high-intensity efforts Garmin watches for peaks above your stored HRmax and raises it to match.

  • It only goes up, never down. A single bad reading inflates your HRmax until you correct it manually.
  • Wrist sensors can lie. Optical wrist heart rate throws artifact spikes from motion or a loose strap. If a spike lands during a hard interval, Garmin locks in a max you never reached.

That combination is why many runners carry a Garmin HRmax a few beats too high.

Why HRmax (and HRmax%) matter so much

Garmin's analytics engine (Firstbeat) uses HRmax as a reference for:

  • Your heart-rate zones. Default zones are bands of HRmax%. If HRmax is 8 beats too high, every boundary shifts up and your "Zone 2" runs end up easier and slower than they should be.
  • VO2 max. Firstbeat estimates VO2 max from pace versus heart rate relative to HRmax. An inflated HRmax makes each effort look less demanding, so Garmin reports a higher VO2 max than you've earned.
  • Training Load and Training Effect. Both lean on where your heart rate sits in your HRmax range.

How to set your HRmax manually on Garmin

  1. On the watch: Settings → User Profile → Heart Rate, or in Garmin Connect under your user profile.
  2. Enter your tested HRmax.
  3. Turn off auto-detection for max heart rate so a wrist-sensor spike cannot overwrite it.

Higher-tier devices (Fenix 8, Forerunner 970/570, Venu 4 and Venu X1) support sport-specific HRmax, useful because your running max usually sits a few beats above your cycling max. Lower-tier models (Forerunner 265/165/55) use one global HRmax.

How to find your real HRmax

The only way to know HRmax is to reach it. A field test:

  • Warm up, then run progressively faster over 10–15 minutes to hard.
  • Finish with an all-out 60–90 second sprint, ideally uphill.
  • The highest number you see is your HRmax estimate. Use a chest strap, not the wrist sensor.
  • Repeat within a couple of weeks and take the higher result.
